Juniper Lamarr Jones - Visual Artist and Writer - Detroit

Juniper Lamarr Jones (b. 1997)

(They, Them, Theirs)

Juniper is a self-taught multidisciplinary visual artist and writer born in Detroit, Michigan. Juniper integrates oil, ink, acrylic, and pastels into their expressive style of painting. Often described as an extension their own fluidity, Juniper’s work is an autobiographical approach to studying their sexuality, gender non conformity, and identity at the intersecting backdrops of ancestry, spirituality, and Black life as it navigates an ever-evolving Detroit.

Jones pulls from their deep magnetism of being called upon by one’s inner self in order to create work that further identifies what they long to discover about the enigmatic concept of fluidity. Their process has resulted in dynamically colorful works that reverberate the idea of developing one’s relationships with their spirit and body.

Although their practice began with a concentration of studying their own journey, Juniper has since taken a journalistic approach to documenting the world of fluidity outside of themselves. These opulently vivid observations of a world only Juniper themselves knows how to orchestrate have led them to documenting the amalgamation of experiences that only Black and fluid lives encounter.
